Army recruit or cadetship: compare the routes

Choose the route because you understand the work and entry conditions. A cadetship is officer training; General Service is the soldier entry route. They are not two names for the same application.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Understand the role you are choosing

The Army recruit page describes the General Service route and progression after initial training. The cadetship booklet concerns training towards an officer commission. Read the official descriptions and consider the responsibilities and commitments involved.

Avoid choosing solely on the basis that one application appears easier or a course advertises more practice questions. You need a realistic reason for the route that you can explain truthfully at interview.

Entry conditions differ

General Service and cadetship educational requirements are different. The recruit page says formal educational qualifications are not required, while cadetship streams have specified education conditions. Army Line and Equitation provisions differ from Engineer and Ordnance specialist qualifications.

Age conditions must be read with the correct reference date and current campaign. Do not reuse the date of a closed cadetship competition when checking a future application. Medical, physical and security conditions also need their own verification.

The selection preparation is not identical

The 2026 cadetship process confirms online and supervised psychometrics, assessment-phase activities and a competency interview. Current General Service pages differ on whether aptitude testing remains a stage, so your own invitation is essential.

Interview preparation should reflect the responsibility of the route. An officer example may need to show how you coordinated others and owned a decision. A strong example still comes from your actual experience, not a fictional military situation.

Make a route decision you can act on

Read both official descriptions, check the entry conditions you can evidence and list what you still need to ask. Use the current opportunities page for open applications. The 2026 cadetship campaign is closed and the next date was unannounced when checked.

If you are considering a long-term move from service to an officer route, obtain current official guidance. Do not treat enlistment as a guaranteed shortcut to a future cadetship. Preparation supports your decision; it cannot guarantee a transfer or selection outcome.

Questions about this stage

Is a cadetship a General Service application?

No. It is a separate officer training route with its own competition terms.

Does joining as a recruit guarantee a later cadetship?

No such guarantee is made here. Check the current official options and conditions for serving applicants.
