Independent Irish Defence Forces preparation

Joining the Irish Army: General Service

Start with the current Army recruit competition and its instructions. General Service preparation should cover the application, interview, fitness and remaining checks; aptitude is conditional on the assessment you are actually invited to take.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

What General Service means

General Service is the soldier entry route. It is separate from an officer cadetship, with different entry conditions and training. The Army recruit page explains the role, training and career progression. Read that description before deciding whether the route fits your interests and commitments.

The current opportunities page lists Army recruitment and application areas. Apply through the official link for the competition. PSP does not receive or submit an application on your behalf. Save the competition name and a copy of the terms you use so you can distinguish them from an older campaign.

Check your invitation before buying test preparation

There is a material difference between current official pages. The Army recruit overview still mentions psychometric testing, while the application-process page presents fitness, interview, medical and attestation without listing an aptitude stage. We therefore do not describe aptitude as a universal General Service requirement.

If your own email includes an online assessment, use its familiarisation link and instructions. If it does not, focus on the stages specified. A forum account of another applicant skipping a test is not a replacement for your invitation.

Make useful progress now

Put your contact details, documents and appointment information in order. Prepare genuine examples of working with others, dealing with a difficulty and taking responsibility, then check the competencies named in your interview instructions. Read the official fitness guidance and get appropriate instruction on technique.

Keep a record of submissions and correspondence. Recruitment timing varies, including because of assessment scheduling and external checks. Do not interpret someone else receiving an invitation first as a decision on your application.

  • Check the live official competition and route conditions.
  • Use a reliable email address and monitor spam folders.
  • Confirm the required stages from your own correspondence.
  • Prepare fitness, interview evidence and documents together.

Questions about this stage

Do all Army recruits currently take aptitude tests?

Current official pages are inconsistent. Follow your competition terms and personal invitation; ask the recruitment contact if they conflict.

Can I use cadet interview material?

Some evidence-building methods transfer, but cadet competencies and officer responsibilities should not be presented as the General Service specification.

Sources and current instructions

These guides explain the preparation process. Check your current competition booklet and invitation before relying on a requirement or date.

Official decisions, eligibility, medical clearance and assessment results belong to the recruiting organisation. A PSP practice score is not an official pass mark or selection prediction.
