Meath Senior Executive Officer 2026: application and selection guide

The Senior Executive Officer is a senior local-authority manager who may work across service areas. The role turns Council strategy and policy into work programmes, people decisions, budgets, controls and services the public can see.

There is no narrow professional degree gate

The declared essentials say candidates must be well educated, have significant experience leading teams and managing resources, and possess high-level administrative and management experience.

Experience implementing policy or strategy in a complex setting is also required, together with satisfactory knowledge of public-service organisation or the ability to acquire it.

That makes evidence, rather than a particular professional label, the main application battleground. The form should show level and scale without expecting the panel to infer them from job titles.

What the role may ask you to do

Duties include implementing legislation and policy, improving services, supporting Strategic Policy Committees and the Corporate Policy Group, working with elected members and external agencies, setting targets and indicators, managing budgets and procurement, and supervising staff up to Administrative Officer or analogous grades.

The ideal profile adds customer focus, negotiation, conflict resolution, autonomous judgement, internal controls, value for money and delivery under pressure.

Build one service story end to end

Choose a service where demand, policy and resources did not line up neatly. Explain how you interpreted the requirement, set a plan, assigned people and money, managed stakeholders and measured the result.

Include the political setting with care. Working effectively with elected members means giving clear, impartial advice and delivering lawful decisions. It does not mean presenting political agreement as your own achievement.

For team leadership, give a separate example if the main service case hides the people work. Show performance standards, feedback, a difficult issue and the change in team output or service quality.

Aptitude-test status

The local-government selection section allows online assessment where applicant numbers are large. It does not confirm that 6820 will use a test, name a supplier or specify numerical, verbal or situational judgement.

Candidates can separately opt into an Irish-language assessment for extra marks. That route is not mandatory.
