The Planning Commissioner makes high-quality, timely decisions on appeals, direct applications and other casework. Those decisions must stand up legally, follow approved procedures and serve proper planning and sustainable development.

The central application question is simple to state and difficult to prove: can you make consequential decisions under pressure and explain the reasoning?

What the role requires

The Commissioner reports to the Deputy Chief Planning Commissioner and works inside the written decision procedures approved by the Governing Board. The organisation has a quasi-judicial role, so independence, impartiality and consistency are part of delivery rather than abstract values.

The person specification seeks senior achievement, leadership, management, resilience, strategic thinking and excellent communication. It also names analysis of complex issues, sound judgement, difficult decisions, resource use, governance and a strong appreciation of planning and sustainable-development policy and law.

Choose decisions, not projects

A large project is not automatically a strong example. The panel needs to see the decision you owned.

For one major case, set out:

• the statutory and policy frame;
• the evidence and submissions that mattered;
• the conflict or uncertainty;
• how you reached and recorded the conclusion;
• the consequence for the public, parties and organisation.

Add a leadership example where you improved quality or throughput without weakening due process. If timeliness was difficult, show the priority choices and controls rather than claiming you simply worked harder.

Governance evidence should also contain action. An account of knowing the rules is weaker than an example where you noticed a risk, corrected a process or protected independence.

The selection menu is wide but not fixed

Possible methods include shortlisting, preliminary interview, online questionnaires, an Executive Assessment Centre, case study, work sample, role play, media exercise and competitive interview with a possible presentation.

The booklet does not confirm an aptitude test. It does not name numerical, verbal or situational-judgement testing. Nor does it say every listed exercise will occur.

Contract points

The whole-time appointment is for up to five years. The booklet says a Planning Commissioner may be reappointed, with aggregate service not exceeding ten years. The post is based at Marlborough Street in Dublin, with travel possible.
