Checked 22 September 2026. Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) is recruiting an Assistant Principal Officer for initial duties in its Human Resources Department. Applications close at 12 noon on Thursday, 8 October 2026. This is an MSLETB recruitment advertised on publicjobs, not the earlier Civil Service HR Managers competition. Start with the MSLETB vacancy and its current candidate booklet (historical link unavailable, checked 13 October 2026).
The first decision is whether your experience meets this particular bar. The booklet asks for at least five years of relevant management experience at an appropriate level, including HR, leading teams and managing stakeholders. It also calls for significant industrial and employee relations experience. Those are essential criteria, not optional extras.
What this AP role covers
This is a senior HR leadership post. The booklet describes responsibility for the HR function across the ETB, including staffing, recruitment and appointment practices, employment matters, employee relations, staff development and HR records. The initial base is MSLETB Head Office in Castlebar, Co. Mayo. MSLETB says it may assign the appointee to another base under its control if needed.
It is a permanent contract with a typical 35-hour week. The published Assistant Principal Officer scale, effective 1 June 2026, begins at €85,204 and lists €103,773 at the second long-service increment. The booklet says the entry point is determined under Department of Education and Youth circulars, so the top figure is not a starting-salary promise.
Check the essentials before writing the form
Alongside the five years of relevant management experience, the booklet specifies a relevant third-level qualification, or equivalent, at a minimum of Level 8. It asks for experience managing a broad portfolio of projects and the leadership to deliver through staff and other resources. A relevant Level 9 qualification, public-sector HR operations, policy development, change management and a full clean Irish driving licence appear under desirable criteria.
Read the exact wording in the candidate booklet before judging your fit. Do not treat the four qualification routes from the separate 2026 Civil Service HR Managers competition as the rules for this job.
The application is the first evidence test
MSLETB will only consider its official application form. The vacancy page (historical link unavailable, checked 13 October 2026) links both the booklet and the form, and gives the email submission instructions. It requires a PDF application and identifies the role reference as APOH26. Follow the live employer instructions for the address and subject line; do not apply through a PublicJobs account for this externally managed vacancy.
Use the form to show the scope of your HR management work plainly. For each relevant example, make the decision, your responsibility, the people or resources involved and the result easy to find. The booklet says an expert board may shortlist from the application forms against essential and desirable criteria. Being eligible does not guarantee an interview.
The booklet lists possible later methods, including a preliminary or competitive interview, a presentation, a work sample or another exercise. It does not confirm a psychometric test or a fixed sequence. Prepare for the stage MSLETB actually invites you to, not for a test inferred from another AP campaign. Our guide to the public service capability framework and STAR method guide can help you organise real examples in your own words.
The practical next step
