Bilingual Internal Auditor HEO 2026: TEG B2 and application guide

This competition has a confirmed examination, but it is not a general aptitude test. It is a TEG Level B2 examination of Irish reading, writing, listening and oral proficiency.

Eligible candidates are due to sit it in Galway on Tuesday 1 September 2026. Candidates with recent TEG certification at B2 or higher may be exempt if the certificate is from the previous two years and covers all four components. Documentary proof is required at application stage.

Check the professional gate before the language plan

Candidates must be qualified members of the Institute of Internal Auditors, or have full membership or eligibility for full membership of a prescribed accountancy body supervised by IAASA. Proof is required before appointment.

At least one year of post-qualification audit experience is also essential, including knowledge and experience of the Global Internal Auditing Standards.

The role expects organisation, attention to detail, calm work under competing deadlines, teamwork and clear written and oral communication. Desirable evidence includes audit software, statistical sampling, public procurement, public-sector finance, legislation and IT controls.

Do this fit check before investing time in language preparation. Passing TEG does not cure an audit-eligibility gap.

What the job is likely to feel like

The Department’s Internal Audit Unit is expanding after the addition of the Gaeltacht function. About a quarter of the bilingual auditor’s work is expected to take place through Irish, with internal translation support for lengthy documents.

The HEO will review internal controls and help improve operations. A convincing application should show how you planned an audit, evaluated evidence, handled a difficult finding and helped the audited area improve without diluting independence.

The TEG B2 assessment is confirmed

The official booklet is specific:

• reading, writing, listening and oral Irish will be assessed;
• the standard is TEG Level B2;
• the exam date is 1 September 2026 in Galway;
• a recent qualifying TEG certificate can remove the need to sit it;
• candidates who reach the required Irish standard are invited to interview;
• the later interview is conducted in English.

That is enough evidence to start format-relevant preparation. Use TEG B2 material, not numerical or verbal-reasoning packs designed for publicjobs aptitude competitions.

Split practice across the four components. For oral work, prepare to discuss ordinary topics and the professional substance of audit work without translating a memorised English answer word for word. For writing, favour accurate, direct sentences over unnecessary complexity.

Keep generic wording in its place

Pages 8 and 9 also list several selection methods that may be used and include stock wording saying online assessments may apply to certain competitions. No separate aptitude test is confirmed for this role. The TEG examination is the confirmed assessment.
