- Shortlist sent to the Minister for consideration
This is an oversight appointment to an organisation with more than 340 staff, an annual budget of about €40 million and responsibility for Ireland’s inland fisheries resource. The useful question is not whether you care about fisheries. It is whether your record shows that you can govern a public body of that scale.
There are two vacancies. Both require senior experience in corporate governance and compliance, including decision-making, risk management and the ability to keep attention on strategy rather than drift into operations.
Work out which profile you are applying under
After the common governance requirement, the booklet asks for senior experience under at least one of two profiles.
The ICT profile covers technology, cybersecurity, data or records management, with ICT procurement also named. The sector profile covers aquatic ecology or fish science, fisheries knowledge, or experience managing stakeholders whose priorities do not naturally align.
Do not blur the profiles together in the hope of sounding broadly suitable. Name the profile you are relying on. Then make the link between your evidence and that profile easy to follow.
Desirable experience includes organisational development, scaling or change, legal or regulatory work and risk. Those points can strengthen a candidacy, but they do not replace the essential governance requirement.
What the appointment actually asks of you
Meetings are held at IFI headquarters in Citywest. The booklet anticipates nine half-day board meetings each year, with a full day of preparation before each one. A member is also expected to sit on two subcommittees. Each generally meets five times a year and requires further preparation.
That is a meaningful reading and judgement commitment. A convincing application should show that you understand the difference between bringing specialist knowledge to a board and trying to manage the executive team from the board table.
Good evidence may include a decision where you:
- tested management assumptions without taking over the work;
- connected a technical risk to the organisation’s wider purpose;
- balanced compliance, finance and service consequences;
- handled several stakeholders with legitimate but competing interests;
- improved governance while keeping decisions usable.
If state-board selection is new to you, read what publicjobs boards assess before drafting. It will help you turn seniority into evidence rather than biography.
There is no named aptitude test
The booklet describes an assessment panel reviewing expressions of interest against the stated criteria. The panel may consider the written documents, hold a meeting or conference call, conduct referee checks, or use another selection or verification method.
It does not name a numerical, verbal, situational-judgement or other candidate aptitude test. The phrase allowing another method is not confirmation that a test will occur.
The application is therefore the immediate selection exercise. Treat the cover letter as a mapped argument, not a warm introduction.
A stronger way to structure the cover letter
Start with the shared requirement. Give a short example of governance and compliance at senior level, including the scale of the organisation, the decision you influenced and the risk or accountability involved.
Move next to your chosen specialist profile. Use one or two examples with enough detail to show your personal contribution. A list of boards, projects or qualifications makes the panel do the interpretation for you.
Finish by addressing independence, conflicts and time. If a potential conflict exists, deal with it openly as the booklet requests. Avoid spending half the letter repeating the CV.
