Cork Senior Executive Engineer 2026: eligibility and application guide

The Cork role covers engineering programmes across Council services rather than one named technical section. The Senior Executive Engineer may manage construction, operations or maintenance work, lead staff, control budgets and contribute to corporate and climate-action plans.

Check the declared qualification route

The booklet provides four alternatives: an accredited Level 8 engineering degree, a Level 7 engineering degree plus a Level 9 engineering master’s, an accredited integrated Level 9 engineering master’s, or the recognised professional title of Chartered Engineer.

Candidates also need at least seven years of satisfactory relevant engineering experience, high technical training, administrative and management experience, and public-service knowledge or the ability to acquire it.

Upload the certificate and transcript required for the route you claim. The application should make the route and the seven-year timeline obvious.

What Cork wants beyond eligibility

The duties include programme and project implementation, construction and maintenance contract administration, multidisciplinary working, targets and service plans, workforce management, budgets, health and safety, procurement, planning compliance and governance.

The ideal profile adds a multiannual project portfolio, staff and conflict management, strategic planning, stakeholder communication and value for money. Experience in capital delivery and the Capital Works Management Framework is desirable.

That points to a useful application structure: one major delivery example, one people-leadership example and one stakeholder or governance example.

Make the engineering decision visible

For the delivery example, state the need, options, technical constraints and contract route. Explain your decision, how you controlled design and buildability risk, and the effect on budget, programme and service.

For people leadership, include work allocation, performance, capability or a difficult employee-relations issue. “Managed a multidisciplinary team” needs a result and a decision.

For stakeholders, choose a case involving another public body, service provider, elected representatives or the community. Show where you sought agreement and where you had to hold a professional line.

Test wording, read accurately

The booklet says online assessment may be used where a competition receives large numbers. It does not confirm that competition 6854 will have one. No numerical, verbal or situational-judgement test is named.

The optional Irish-language assessment is a separate extra-marks route. Prepare it only if you opt in. For the main competition, finish the evidence and monitor Review Communications.
