Westmeath’s Senior Executive Engineer identifies infrastructure needs and leads the programmes used to meet them. The role controls in-house and consultant delivery, staff, budgets, safety and public relationships.

Start with the declared qualification

The same four engineering routes apply: an accredited Level 8 degree, a Level 7 engineering degree plus Level 9 engineering master’s, an accredited integrated Level 9 master’s, or recognised Chartered Engineer status.

Candidates also need seven years of relevant engineering work, high technical training, administrative and management experience, and public-service knowledge or the capacity to acquire it.

Qualification documents must support the exact route claimed. Overseas awards need the comparability evidence described in the booklet.

What the Westmeath duties emphasise

The post supervises engineering services and work programmes, identifies infrastructure needs, manages project design and delivery and procures consultants and contractors. It also controls capital and service budgets, staff performance, health and safety and programme deliverables.

The engineer deals with elected members, communities, businesses and residents, represents the Council at meetings and works with government departments and statutory agencies.

The desirable profile mentions data interpretation, calculations and systematic problem-solving, alongside accuracy and new approaches to engineering problems.

Prepare a portfolio decision

One useful example is a year when the need for work exceeded the available budget or team capacity. Explain how you assessed need, risk and public consequence, then show the programme you set and how you communicated delayed or changed priorities.

Add a project example with consultants or contractors. Include the brief, technical decision, cost and contract controls, safety and result. If the project encountered a problem, show the recovery rather than editing it out.

Finally, prepare a people example. Staff development, performance and conflict are part of senior engineering delivery.

The selection wording allows online assessment when candidate numbers justify it. No test is confirmed for 6578, and no numerical, verbal or situational-judgement format is named.

The optional Irish-language assessment is separate and can add marks for candidates who opt in and reach the standard.
