Meath Senior Executive Engineer 2026: candidate guide

The Meath Senior Executive Engineer manages staff and a work programme while delivering local-authority services under financial and public scrutiny. The role works closely with elected members and may be assigned across Council directorates.

The eligibility gate

Candidates must meet one of the declared engineering routes: an accredited Level 8 engineering degree, a Level 7 engineering degree with a Level 9 engineering master’s, an accredited integrated Level 9 engineering master’s, or recognised Chartered Engineer status.

At least seven years of satisfactory relevant engineering work is required. The booklet also asks for high technical, administrative and management experience and public-service knowledge or the capacity to acquire it.

Supporting certificates and transcripts are part of the application. Check accreditation and dates before writing the narrative sections.

The work is infrastructure plus public management

Duties include design and delivery of infrastructure, procurement and management of consultants and contractors, statutory consents, construction supervision, maintenance programmes, budgets and schedules.

The engineer represents the Council with elected members, communities, residents and businesses. They also work with government departments, other authorities and statutory agencies, lead multidisciplinary teams and improve service efficiency.

That means a technically successful project can still be a weak application example if it omits people, governance and public communication.

Build one end-to-end example

Start with the need and the service consequence. Explain your options, design or procurement decision, statutory constraints and budget. Then show how you led consultants, contractors and Council staff through delivery.

Include the point where a stakeholder issue changed or tested the plan. Did you revise the design, explain why a request could not be met, or find a workable agreement? Finish with schedule, cost, quality and service outcome.

Use another example for change or staff performance. The booklet values line management, inter-agency work, systems and targets, not only project completion.

Assessment status

The local-government competition text allows online assessments where applicant numbers are large. It does not confirm an aptitude test for 6695, specify question types or set a test date.

Candidates may also opt for a separate Irish-language assessment for additional marks. It is not mandatory.
