Dublin Assistant Chief Quantity Surveyor 2026: candidate guide
The registration, nine-year experience rule, commercial leadership evidence and conditional test clause for Dublin City Council competition 6082.
What happens next
- Application with quantity-surveying qualification documents
- Possible scored shortlisting
- Possible online assessment if candidate numbers require it
- Interview and optional Irish-language assessment if selected
The Assistant Chief Quantity Surveyor helps lead Dublin City Council’s commercial and cost-management service across capital programmes. The post advises senior management, leads staff and consultant teams, manages budgets and contributes to procurement and dispute resolution.
The statutory and experience gate
Candidates need a professional quantity-surveying qualification prescribed under the Building Control Act 2007, or an equivalent qualification, and must be eligible for registration as a Quantity Surveyor without further assessment. Appointment is subject to registration.
At least nine years of satisfactory relevant quantity-surveying experience is required, along with high technical training, administrative and strategic management experience and public-service knowledge or the ability to acquire it.
Upload the qualifications and transcripts specified in the documentation section. Do not leave registration eligibility as an implied consequence of membership.
What the role carries
The division supports housing, transport, cultural and environmental projects through procurement, estimating, cost control, contracts and project delivery. The Assistant Chief advises the Chief Quantity Surveyor and senior managers and works across Council departments and external bodies.
Duties include leadership of staff, management of in-house and consultant work, corporate and project budgets, business plans and indicators, project boards, conciliation, arbitration and dispute resolution, and advice on national and European procurement rules.
Choose evidence with commercial consequence
Use a project where your advice changed what happened. Set out the original scope or risk, cost information, contract or procurement issue and options. Then explain your recommendation and effect on budget, time, quality or dispute exposure.
Add a people example that shows how you set standards, developed staff or resolved a performance issue. At this level, personal technical ability and divisional leadership have to appear together.
Where a dispute is your example, avoid hindsight. Explain what the records showed at the time, the contractual position, the advice you gave and how public funds were protected.
Is an aptitude test confirmed?
No. The local-government wording says online assessment may be used if candidate numbers require it. It does not confirm a numerical test because the role involves cost, nor any other test type.
An optional Irish-language assessment may provide extra marks for candidates who opt in. It is separate from core eligibility.
